Our Invitation

Matthew 25:34 (ESV) … “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

Perhaps you have gone to your mailbox and discovered that you have been invited to a significant event. Almost everyone loves to receive a special invite to big things in their community, family, and friends. Nothing seems to hurt our feelings more than when we are left out and do not receive a special invite that others have gotten.

The good news of Matthew 25:34 is that the invitation is extended to everyone, and this invitation comes from the king himself. The word come, is the same word used to invite the disciples to follow him in Matthew 4:19. It is also the same word used to invite the weary to come and find rest in him (Matthew 11:28). It is also the word used to call the guests to the wedding feast mentioned in Matthew 22:4.

What we see in Matthew 25:34 is a clear invitation offered to everyone a seat at the table of the family of God. This passage brings to mind the invitation that’s given in Revelation 22:17. This invitation is to inherit the kingdom prepared for us since the creation of the world. What a shame it would be to miss out on what God had prepared for us, what was designed for us before this world was even created because we simply refused the invitation. It’s one thing to not receive an invitation, yet it’s altogether an entirely different thing to reject an invitation. Particularly when that invitation comes from the King of Kings himself.
