God Hems Us In On Every Side

Psalm 139:5 (ESV) … “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.”

Then David says, Lord, You surround my every maneuver: “Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid Thine hands upon me” (139:5). The word beset literally means “to be cramped or limited”; it is the word used for besieging a town. God hems us in on every side so that there is no escape. None of life’s little disguises deceive Him. We use them all the time with each other but He sees through them. None of our petty evasions fool Him. He sees through all the games people play for exploiting each other and acquiring psychological benefits for themselves. David realized this.[1]
