Elizabeth’s Anthem

Luke 1:45 (ESV) … “And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”

Elizabeth’s anthem is the shortest of the three anthems in Luke 1. Her anthem is divided into two parts. Her anthem speaks of blessings for herself in that Mary, the mother of her Lord should visit her. Second, she speaks of blessings for others for the child in which Mary carries. In the blessing for others, Elizabeth gives three prophesied for others. The repetition of “blessed” in this anthem tell us that this is a joyous moment for this world that awaits the coming of the Lord.

Finally, we must see that there is no blessing for unbelief. Unbelief only brings judgment. Faith in the word of God will always be vindicated by the “performance” of the predictions of the Word. Mary’s faith is Gospel faith, for she believed what God said about His Son. What we believe about God’s Son, Jesus Christ, determines our eternal destiny.
