Christian Contentment

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV) … “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

God is the ultimate Provider. He feeds the birds and the beasts, sends springtime harvest and soft, refreshing rain. Our ability to work and our temporal employment are of His providing. God knows our needs, our circumstances, and all about us, and He has pledged Himself to take care of us.

The Lord Jesus gave an interesting illustration of this when He said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing [penny]? And not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father” (Matt. 10:29). “Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings? And not one of them is forgotten before God” (Luke 12:6). Did you notice that? Two sparrows for a penny, five sparrows for two pence. Now look at that odd sparrow, the one with no value, tossed in to make a bargain. Even its affairs are God’s concern! How it must grieve Him when we distrust Him, when we are greedy, materialistic, and filled with a love for money.[1]
